"But what is the point," you ask, "if I can use a calculator?"
A calculator is only as good as what you enter into it. Wrong input, wrong answer.
A calculator can’t solve complex problems. You have to know what steps to take, and in what order. If you don’t know what you are punching in, then you could easily come up with the incorrect number. In some high-pressure situations, it may not be practical to have a calculator in your pocket or there may not be a pen and paper close by. At school, if your basics are firmly cemented in your brain, there is less need for a calculator and you can whiz through the questions faster, and have more time to get through the rest of the test/exam. You can still use a calculator to check your answer if you want to be sure. A calculated mind means that you will have confidence and competence in doing the math mentally when it counts. |
