How it Works

1. Numeracy Needs Assessment

Firstly we conduct a meet and greet session where we get to know each other. We'll explore how you like to learn, your interests and your feelings towards number crunching. There will also be the opportunity to do a 15–30 minute maths skills check relative to your school year. From this information, we will propose and Action Plan and send it to you by email soon after the meeting.

The Numeracy Needs Assessment goes for 60 minutes and is conducted face-to-face, in the student's home or meeting room within the area bounded by Collaroy, Manly/Seaforth and Belrose/Forestville on Sydney's northern  beaches.

2. Schedule Action: Tuition

We schedule your face-to-face tuition sessions according to the plan you choose and focus on the areas that need the most improvement.

Tuition can also be centred around a specific math topic for an upcoming test/exam.

We customise the tuition to your child's preferred learning style and personal interests where applicable. The more your child engages with the session, the more beneficial it will be to their learning.

Homework tasks are given at each tutorial to practice the learning from the session.

Other: Homework Help

Homework help, customised tuition or exam preparation is available for the following school levels in 2025:-

• Years 3 – 8 (Common stream)
• Years 9 & 10 (Core & Advanced)
• Years 11 & 12 (Standard 1 & 2)

The best way to make the most of the session, is for your child to have attempted all their homework questions beforehand, so that we can hone in on areas that need attention straight away.

Please note that homework help is only applicable if your child is up-to-date with the curriculum and hasn’t fallen behind in the subject areas being covered. See "Bridging the Gaps" below.

Bridging the Gaps

Curriculum threads are strands within the maths syllabus that are progressive and entwine with other threads to build understanding of other maths topics.
Many people tend to think that tuition is about getting their children to keep up with the subjects taught in their current school class. But if there are very large gaps in their child’s understanding and application of a topic, scrambling to keep up with the day class can be a futile exercise.

There is little point pitching at “Level 8” if someone is stuck on “Level 5”. Tuition in this case needs to go back to the student’s understanding of “Level 5” and fill in the gaps that will bridge them up to “Level 8”. This is because the mathematics curriculum is designed around many different threads that start somewhere in kindergarten / primary school and continue through to the end of high school.
The thread for Money / Finance for example, starts with recognising Australian notes and coins in the early years of primary school. Each year, the teachings progress along each thread. By Year 6 / 7, the student can work out percentages of prices, and in senior high school, the accumulated knowledge enables them to interpret a business’ break-even point or compare long-term investment plans. If a student has difficulty understanding the meaning and application of percentages, then there are essential learnings (or re-learnings) that have to take place before expecting them to calculate annuities. This is why trying to keep up with the current class program is not always the goal of a math tutor, and the starting point depends on where the student is at for any given thread. The different curriculum threads generally combine with other threads in specific topics. Money / Finance requires the integration of the threads around counting numbers, decimals and place values as well as the specific knowledge of the Australian currency and borrowing, investing, income, pricing, etc.
