Is your primary school child’s maths report becoming more concerning, but you don’t know why?

Or has your child lost the excitement they once had around going to school?

Sometimes all you need is a good pair of eagle eyes--with undivided attention--to observe your child in the act of learning and performing mathematically over a period of time to see if anything stands out.

Children in school years 3 – 8 are encouraged to partake in the Stepping Stone UPSTREAM program with Calculated Minds. This is a short-term series of numeracy tutorials with screening and observation, intended to detect and articulate any barriers that may interfere with your child's number-crunching potential.

The Stepping Stone UPSTREAM program starts with a Needs Assessment, followed by a series of five one-hour tutorials. During the fifth session, we hold a meeting between the numeracy coach and the child’s parent(s) to discuss how the program went and ideal steps forward. If considered relevant, a list of health practitioners who measure psychological and physiological factors involved in learning, will be provided to you with a referral letter. Highly-skilled health practitioners can work with you to improve your child’s learning platform, so that they can perform better academically with and without extra tuition.

Think of it as a transitional step that pinpoints subtle habits that can lead to an academic lag, and then re-directs you upstream to assess and address their possible causes. The best time to do this is while your child is young, and before academic demands increase in high school.

The Stepping Stone UPSTREAM Program is conducted in-person only. If your home is not suitable for geographical or other reasons, a local meeting room can be hired for an additional fee.

Please contact Felicity if your child is ready for a change of course.

Maths Xpress

Could your child use some more hands-on maths practice, that is fun at the same time (and has NO homework 😀)?

Can you organise a group of 3 – 5 children aged 8 – 12 who also like this idea?

Then the Maths Xpress circuit class may be just right!

What is Maths Xpress?

It is a humble but action-packed circuit class where maths comes to life!
  • Short and punchy numeracy practice in a small group
  • Maths in simulated real-life scenarios as well as routine drills
  • Time-limited stations to keep things moving (Chop-Chop)
  • When the bell rings, all 'passengers' move on to the next station (Choo-Choo)
  • Choice of earlier stage (Year 3–4) or later stage (Year 5–7) activities at each station
  • Integration of school maths with fun, tangible and memorable tasks
  • Maximum five students in one circuit class
  • The venue is open for discussion but generally, a good-sized meeting room at a local community centre needs to be booked in advance.
  • Venue suggestions are the Harbord Literary Institute or the Forestville Arts and Community Centre.
